Online learning reflection
SYNCHRONOUS
ADVANTAGES
On the spot QA and discussion with peers, profs, and students
ASYNCHRONOUS
ADVANTAGES
Time flexibility as they are not scheduled
Scheduled, better to give structure to our day
Mainly recorded, access anytime
Feeling of connection and socialization
Helpful for students that live in different time zones
DISADVANTAGES
Technical challenges with wifi and equipment
Schedules that do not match particular situations
DISADVANTAGES
Miscommunication and misunderstanding that cannot be solved right away
Less socialization, isolated feeling
HOW TO OVERCOME ONLINE LEARNING CHALLENGES?
Learning space
Declutter and organize your study space: have a clean desk, organize your cables and chargers
Get rid of distractions in your devices: close unnecessary tabs, mute notifications, use the no disturb mode
Schedule learning and personal time to be as productive as possible
For learning, schedule: assignments, lecture recordings, content review, projects in stages
Personal time, schedule: food, shower, walk or workout breaks, and even time to meditate or do an activity that helps you express your feelings
Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of work, and 5 minutes of rest consecutively until you achieve your goal
Modified pomodoro technique: 30 minutes of work, 30 minutes of rest or getting rid of anxiety, stress, distracted energy, 30 min. work, 30 min rest consecutively until you achieve your goal
Avoiding miscommunication
Ask the professor to write down the structure of the class or the instructions
Write down the details yourself
If you are having connection problems, do not hesitate to express it and ask the instructor to repeat themselves
PAPER NOTES VS DIGITAL NOTES

VIDEO'S SCRIPT
Hi, today I am going to talk about my learning experience and preferences of the online education mode.
Classes in my university were offered as synchronous, asynchronous or a combination of both. My preference is synchronous classes, because they feel like regular classes. In this you can do on the post question and answers, as well as discussions with your profs, students and peers. In this synchronous classes I like to have the professor and the class screen on one side, and in the other a document where I write down notes. I have always liked using paper to write my notes down, but online instruction pacing is a little faster and I was having a hard time keeping up writing my notes. I am faster at typing and I can complement my notes with online images. For the asynchronous part of my classes I always tried to set a specific schedule where I could engage in learning. I learn a lot by going to class, it is my first way to absorb content, so I would try to see it as a normal class. I would usually get very distracted in the asynchronous classes, so I would try to zoom in or isolate the part that I was working on to avoid any distraction. I have tried this with my students, especially when we are working with lyrics I have found it is easier for students, especially kids, to focus on only that part. Computers, browsers and the digital world in general can be very distracting with all notifications, so it is important to get a focus spaced both in the physical and digital way. Sometimes when the connection is not good, it really helped me that my teachers would write the instructions or the structure of the class on the chat. I also started doing that, because most of the time my students would have a hard time hearing me and it can be very frustrating to them. One of the things I really had to be very careful to differentiate was the asynchronous factor vs the additional class time that I would spend outside class. I eventually noticed I was not spending as much time outside class, so I would also schedule this. It was very difficult to me to schedule more than an hour of outside class study time or even asynchronous time, so I used the pomodoro technique. This is a technique that will make you work and focus for twenty five minutes and then get five minutes of rest. Now, usually you need to have twenty five minutes of work five of rest twenty five off work five of rest consecutively, but I had hard time to do that too, so what i would do is do thirty minutes of work instead of the regular technique. Another thing that I really learnt is that, although it is difficult to transition to full time online learning, there are so many good things too. Like how profs would invite performers and speakers that in regular situations would have been difficult. I have also tried to show the good part of online learning to my students by incorporating different softwares like Cleanfeed and pages like inside the orchestra and chrome music lab. With this, I wanted to show them that leisure time online can be combined with education through this apps.
